My experience today (March 5, 2021) was amazing! I booked my appointment online for Japanese straightening with Tatsuya. I researched many places in Jersey to see where I can do this and the one place I went to for an appointment told me I couldn't because I needed to let my hair "grow out". I didn't want to go anywhere so I finally found this place in town and I was delighted with the results! It was definitely worth the trip and $$. My natural hair is a bit curly/wavy and somewhat long, but I am always straightening and damaging it. That's why I decided to do this and Tatsuya did a great job, he knows what he does. My hair looks very healthy and feels so soft.Google Rating

I have been coming here since 2012 for Japanese hair straightening. I have naturally thick and curly hair (I'm a Filipina) and I don't have the patience or time (I'm a mother of 2) to style it. The process takes about 4 hours and is expensive ($420), but it's worth it. I have had the treatment three times and my hair has been straight for about a year. In addition to the fact that the product is excellent, my stylist Yoko is an expert in her craft and we work well together. I don't really like to talk when I'm in the living room and she leaves me alone. This is important to me because "me time" requires advanced planning (child care) and I like to spend time in the living room reading magazines or books or sleeping. There is never any pressure to buy products, no unsolicited feedback on how I look and how I should take care of my hair, etc. It's a relaxed salon with expert stylists and most importantly great results!Google Rating

I received a Japanese hair straightening treatment from Eric. He is very good at what he does. I have very curly and thick hair. Eric managed to leave my hair silky smooth after the treatment. I will definitely return to continue the treatment. I recommend this salon to anyone who has thick curly hair and wants to make it more manageable.google review

Anna has been straightening my hair for over 10 years. First we started with Japanese and now I opted to try OXO. She is a competent professional (as well as being a wonderful person with a huge heart). My hair is shiny, healthy and with movement. No one would have guessed that I fixed it for the last 10 years unless I told them or read this review. I would recommend Ana to anyone.Google Rating

Definitely 5 stars!!!! I have been at this location for 5 years, thanks to Nelson! I've been getting Japanese hair straighteners, haircuts and oil treatments and I can't imagine a better place. I brought my sister too and she got her smoothing and balayage done here. We are both very happy with the results! Not only are they professionals, but they also make you feel important, offering you water, coffee, and even lunch! Nelson always helps choose the cut or color! They also take all precautions for COVID-19, check temperatures, sanitize their hands, and have dividers between chairs. Absolutely wonderfull! I recommend it to everyone who cares about their hair! Nelson, YOU ARE THE BEST!google review

I am a regular customer here and frequently see Mark for haircuts and Japanese hair straightening. He is always very professional and polite, he uses high quality products and gives good instructions on how to take care of my hair. Japanese hair straightening here is very affordable compared to other places and does a thorough job though time consuming. The haircuts are always classic and in style and the price really can't be beat for the quality. The atmosphere is really modern and contemporary and the service is always up to scratch. The location is also very convenient, being right next to the Stadium-Chinatown skytrain. I will be a customer for life.Google Rating

I have been going to HairBarNYC for about 3 years now, on and off every 6 months for the 24k keratin treatment. It is the best. My hair is kinky and curly, of medium thickness and decently long. After the treatment my hair feels silky and frizz free with a soft beachy wave and lasts 4-6 months. I had Susana get my last keratin last weekend and I am THRILLED with my results! I accepted my first balayage last summer (another salon) and my hair was especially dry and matted… Susana did her magic and she gave me miraculous new hair !!!!! Now I wash it and feel like a goddess even after air drying. SO easy and cut my prep time in half. Not to mention that all the staff are very friendly and welcoming and the downtown location is impeccable. Thank you Susana and HairBar!!!Google Rating

Is Japanese straightening bad for hair?
Japanese straightening is a very harsh chemical treatment for hair.
The use of alkaline agents opens the hair cuticle and uses the power of heat to reshape the hair to make it straight.
However, even though the actual hair is damaged, the final look is very shiny and healthy.
It's also silky to the touch and easy to style, so customers who have had your Japanese straightener will think their hair is healthier.
These days, services like Japanese acid straightening, which is gentler on the hair, are becoming more popular.
Is Japanese straightening permanent?
Japanese straightening is permanent.
It is very important that you take good care of your hair to prevent it from getting damaged.
However, when chemical processes such as coloring and perming are used after straightening, the hair becomes weaker.
If the hair is weakened, it will not be able to maintain its smoothness, becoming dry and wavy.
How long does Japanese straightening last?
Do you know how long Japanese straightening lasts?
It depends on the condition of the hair and the length of the hair.
If your hair is healthy, it will last longer, but if it's damaged, no.
Long hair is kept in better condition than short hair.
|Short hair||2 to 4 months|
|medium hair||3 to 5 months|
|wide||4 to 6 months|
Japanese straightening is permanent, but as the hair grows from the roots, it will need to be touched up as often as indicated in the table above.
What is better keratin or Japanese straightening?
Both the Japanese straightening and the keratin treatment have their advantages and disadvantages.
Hair straighteners can be used to straighten any type of hair, but they are not suitable for very damaged hair.
Keratin treatments cannot straighten very frizzy hair, but they can be used to treat bleached or damaged hair.
Your hairdresser will be able to advise you on which service is most suitable for your hair type.
How to maintain after Japanese straightening?
After straightening your hair, it is generally necessary to avoid washing your hair for 48 hours.
Today, with the advancement of chemical straightening products, you don't always have to wait that long.
However, since straightened hair is not 100% straight, it is best to avoid wearing hats, bobby pins, and ponytails.
And be sure to use hair care products that are gentle on your hair, like amino acid shampoo.
How much does Japanese straightening cost?
We look at the average price.
Each salon has a different price.
- hair length
- amount of hair
- The strength of your hair
The price will vary according to the above conditions.
If you want to know the exact price, always call or email us before you book.
The Japanese smoothing process
This is the general process.
- Apply 1st solution
- rinse and dry
- ironing process
- apply neutralizer
- wash and comb
It takes 2-4 hours for the whole process, depending on your hair type.
If your hair is very curly or with a lot of hair, take some time.
Overview of Japanese straightening
There are so many beauty salons where you can straighten your hair, but if you make a mistake, the damage to your hair can be very serious.
That is why you have to find a hairdresser who is really good at straightening your hair.
The difficulty of straightening hair depends on the texture and condition of the hair.
If you have strong hair, the risk of failure is low, but if your hair is soft or you have had chemical treatments in the past, the risk is high.
For smooth, beautiful hair, do your research and find the best hairdresser for you.
